Open to all Vienna-based researchers. Every discipline, every career stage. Submit a coherent series of three to ten images from your research and win a share of €5,000 in award money.
Every lab, archive and field site produces images nobody outside ever sees. ReFrame brings the best of them into public view.
All submitted images may be featured in the Vienna Research Radar, WWTF's report, and public science communication activities, with full attribution to the researcher and institution.
From master's students to full professors, plus non-academic research roles such as data managers, lab managers, and science communicators.
Open to anyone researching in Vienna or the wider metropolitan region, including ISTA and IIASA. No formal affiliation or Austrian citizenship required.
€3,000 for the winning entry, plus €1,000 each for two runners-up.
Submit 3 to 10 images that belong together and come from a single research project. Each has its own title, description, and method.
No field excluded, no career stage excluded. If you work in or around science in Vienna, this award is for you.
Researchers at every career stage, as well as others who work in science: data managers, research librarians, lab managers, science communicators, and more.
Natural sciences, humanities, engineering, medicine, social sciences. Every field of research is eligible. And not only microscopes and lab benches: fieldwork, archives, interviews, models, and data make research just as visible. We especially want to see the images that usually stay out of frame.
You do research in Vienna or the wider metropolitan region, including institutions such as ISTA and IIASA. No formal affiliation required, and no Austrian citizenship required.
Three things count: the science behind the series, how the images look and work together, and how clearly you explain them.
Submit 3 to 10 images from a single research project: not ten unrelated shots, but a set that belongs together and tells one story.
Images must originate from your research: microscopy, simulations, field data, measurements, etc.
Nothing outer-terrestrial, nothing generated, nothing mystified. No AI-generated or composite images, and nothing over-dramatized. Show the science as it really is.
Between 2 MB and 20 MB. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, or HEIC.
You must be the sole copyright holder. Images taken by or belonging to others are not eligible.
Standard adjustments (brightness, contrast, white balance) are permitted. Composites or generative AI are not.
Name, institution, position, and research field. Takes about two minutes.
Add 3–10 images with a title, description, and method for each. Works on mobile.
WWTF staff carry out a formal eligibility check. Every eligible entry goes to independent jury review. Winners are announced in Q1 2027.
Deadline: 30 November 2026, 2 pm.
